Each tested a different intervention, so no result was independently repeated within the review.

A randomized trial of N-acetylcysteine, or NAC, found no significant improvement in overall hangover scores compared with placebo.

A small glutathione trial lowered acetaldehyde but did not significantly improve overall hangover scores. It tested one preparation under controlled conditions.

Drinking less, eating before or while drinking, and allowing time for sleep and recovery are more dependable choices than relying on a pill.

You have plans tonight and an early morning tomorrow. A small packet near the checkout promises to make both work. Take it before the first drink, the label says, and tomorrow will be easier.

It is an appealing idea. The hard part is separating relief from a claim that a pill protects you from alcohol. A hangover prevention pill may contain vitamins, plant extracts, or antioxidants, but no product has strong, repeated human evidence that it reliably prevents a hangover. Some ingredients have small trials. None makes heavy drinking safe or removes alcohol from your body on demand.

Why is a hangover so hard to prevent?

A hangover is not one problem with one switch. Alcohol can disturb sleep, irritate the stomach, increase fluid loss, and set off inflammatory responses. As your liver processes alcohol, it also produces acetaldehyde, a short-lived compound that can stress tissues. A pill aimed at one pathway may leave the others untouched.

That is why a capsule can look convincing in a lab study and still disappoint at breakfast. The test might measure a blood marker, a headache score, or nausea after a fixed amount of alcohol. Your real night includes variable sleep, food, drink strength, medications, and your own biology.

What have human studies actually found?

The broad review gives the clearest answer

A 2022 systematic review assessed randomized, placebo-controlled trials of hangover prevention and treatment. It included 21 studies with 386 participants. A few single studies found a benefit for specific products, but the review rated all efficacy evidence very low quality. No two trials tested the same intervention, so the findings could not be pooled or reliably replicated.

This does not prove every ingredient is useless. It means the evidence is too thin to recommend a hangover prevention pill as a dependable strategy.

NAC is a useful reality check

NAC supplies cysteine, a building block your body can use to make glutathione. Glutathione helps cells handle oxidative stress, which is an imbalance between damaging reactive molecules and the systems that control them. That mechanism makes NAC sound like a natural fit.

But in a randomized crossover trial, 49 volunteers took NAC or placebo after drinking beer to a set breath alcohol level. The total hangover score did not differ significantly between the two conditions. A biological reason to test an ingredient is not the same as a proven benefit for the person taking it.

What about glutathione and newer formulas?

A 2024 randomized crossover trial tested a yeast extract containing 50 mg of glutathione in 40 adults. The researchers reported lower acetaldehyde levels at several measured time points. Overall hangover questionnaire scores and serum alcohol levels did not differ significantly. It is a small, preparation-specific result, and it does not establish that a different glutathione pill prevents hangovers or reduces long-term harm.

Products often combine several ingredients. When a formula changes the dose, timing, or form, the original trial no longer tests that finished product. A label that cites an ingredient study should tell you exactly which outcome was measured and whether the marketed formula was studied.

How should you evaluate a pill before buying it?

Look for a human trial on the finished formula, with a placebo group and a clear measure of the next-day experience. Ask how many people were tested, how much alcohol they drank, and whether the result was repeated. Be skeptical of phrases such as “blocks alcohol damage” or “detoxes overnight.” A change in one blood marker does not prove either claim.

Read the full ingredient list. “Proprietary blend” hides the dose of each ingredient, making a study comparison nearly impossible. Supplements can also interact with medicines or add to an existing liver concern. Talk with your clinician before taking one if you have liver disease, take regular medication, are pregnant, or notice unusual symptoms after drinking.

What is a better plan for tomorrow morning?

If you choose to drink, the most reliable way to reduce hangover risk is to drink less. Eating beforehand can slow alcohol absorption. Water and rest can help with discomfort, but they do not erase impairment or speed the liver’s work. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism says no remedy has been scientifically proven to cure a hangover; recovery takes time.

Avoid using a prevention pill as permission to drive, keep drinking, or ignore a pattern of feeling unwell after alcohol. If this is happening often, the more useful question is what regular drinking is doing to your sleep, metabolic health, and liver. A clinician can help evaluate those concerns. Jinfiniti’s longevity blood tests can add broader metabolic and oxidative-stress context, but they cannot predict tomorrow’s hangover or show that a pill made drinking safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should you take a hangover pill before or after drinking?

There is no general timing rule supported by strong evidence. Trials use different ingredients and schedules. Follow a product’s directions only after checking its safety with your clinician when you have a health condition or take medicines.

Does NAC prevent hangovers?

One placebo-controlled crossover trial found no significant difference in overall hangover scores. That result does not settle every possible dose or population, but it does not support a broad prevention claim.

Can a pill make it safe to drink more?

No. Symptom relief would not prove protection from impaired judgment, alcohol poisoning, or longer-term health risks. If you are worried about dependence or withdrawal, seek medical advice rather than using a supplement.

🧬 Related Reading

Best Supplements for Alcohol Detox

Best Liver Supplements: What the Research Supports

References

Roberts E, Smith R, Hotopf M, Drummond C.
